The history of painting begins more than 30,000 years ago, when early humans painted on cave walls. Sites like Lascaux in France, Altamira in Spain, and Bhimbetka caves in India show animals, hunting scenes, and symbolic drawings.


  • Early paints were made from charcoal, minerals, clay, and natural pigments.

  • Subjects included buffalo, deer, and human handprints, often connected with rituals.

  • These paintings were not just decoration—they were a way of communication and spiritual belief.

 This proves that even before language, art was a universal language.

 Ancient Civilizations ; Painting as Culture

Civilizations across the world gave unique styles to painting:

  • Egyptian Paintings: Murals inside pyramids and tombs focused on life after death. Pharaohs, gods, and daily life scenes were painted using bold outlines and flat colors.

  • Greek & Roman Art: They introduced realism, portraits, and mythological stories. Roman frescoes (wall paintings) can still be seen in Pompeii.

  • Chinese Painting: Known for ink wash painting on silk and paper. Subjects were nature, landscapes, and calligraphy—an art still admired today.

  • Indian Painting: Ancient Ajanta and Ellora caves are famous for murals depicting Buddhism, life of Buddha, and spiritual stories.

The Middle Ages (5th–15th century) focused mostly on religious art, especially Christianity. Churches and cathedrals were decorated with murals, stained glass, and manuscripts.

Then came the Renaissance (14th–17th century), known as the golden age of painting. Artists studied human anatomy, perspective, and light, creating realistic works that were never seen before.

  • Leonardo da Vinci gave us Mona Lisa and The Last Supper.

  • Michelangelo painted the breathtaking ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

  • Raphael created The School of Athens, representing philosophy and art.
